Pickens Plan

In recent weeks, there has been an abundance of advertisements on television and extensive news coverage on a new energy plan. The plan called Pickens Plan was developed by businessman T.Boone Pickens, with a goal of reducing our nation’s dependence on foreign oil.

The highlights of the plan include: creating new wind turbines that stretch all the way from Texas up to the Dakotas, creating new power lines that will be able to carry the electricity that is generated from these wind sources to then be used by the public, and then using natural gas (which otherwise is used for electricity generation) to be used to power vehicles.

I agree that Pickens’ plan may hold a lot of merit. It is however, at this point just a plan. It is also a plan that is several years the road as far as being able to be fully implemented.

If we use the same logic concerning Picken’s Plan as I have hear some of our elected representatives spout concerning drilling in the Arctic and offshore drilling then there is little benefit in it as there is no immediate benefit.

This reasoning is flawed. We must, for the very survival of our way of life, proceed with plans like Pickens’, continue research on other alternative energy sources, and also start drilling in the Arctic and offshore immediately.
A multi-prong approach is the only thing that will give us energy independence down the road. The demand for petroleum will never stop or decrease because it is linked and is also an integral component of so many different product…like plastics. Can you imagine a world that doesn’t contain any plastics?

For those that are against increased drilling because there is no immediate benefit to the consumer in reduced gas and energy prices I have to reply….That’s like a farmer saying there is on sense in planting crops in the spring because harvest time is 3 months away.
