Whats Holding Nuclear Energy Back? The Public’s Fears
With oil and gas prices rising drastically over the past few years, it seems that our society has become more educated towards alternative energy sources. In addition, the whole idea of global climate change has further sparked the human interest in clean and renewable energy sources. These concepts include: Wind Turbines, Hydrogen, and Solar Energy just to name a few. However very little attention has been given to the notion of Nuclear Energy.
In recent weeks, presidential candidate Senator John McCain expressed how he wanted to construct 45 new nuclear power plants by the year 2030. If implemented, the total amount of nuclear power plants in the United States would rise to 149. There would also be a significant rise in the total percentage of power generated in the United States from nuclear energy. Other countries such as France use nuclear for nearly eighty-percent of their energy needs. This number compares to about twenty-percent here. However, there are some major problems that surround the idea of constructing new nuclear power stations. High costs to build along with an even higher public concern (especially after the events of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl) have led to no new nuclear power plants being built in the United States in years.
To solve this problem, the public needs to learn about the strong benefits of nuclear power while at the same time alleviating fears that go along with them. Its only then that things in the nuclear sector will be able to move forward.
