California Closing in On Twenty Percent Renewable Energy
Pacific Gas and Electric announced this past Thursday that they signed a major deal with two companies to produce a whopping 800 Mega-Watts of clean and renewable energy. The California based utility company has formally agreed with Optisolar Inc. and the Sunpower Corporation to produce this electricity, entirely from solar power.
The deal with Optisolar Inc. calls for a 550 Mega-Watt solar farm to be built in San Luis Obispo County. The plant is expected to be fully operational by the year 2013. The 250 Mega-Watt plant from the Sunpower Corporation will also be located in San Luis County. It’s completion date is expected to be earlier than the larger 550 Mega-Watt plant, with an expedited construction ending date in 2012. Combined the two plants have the potential to power nearly 250,000 homes.
Pacific Gas and Electric is well on its way of reaching California’s goal of twenty-percent renewable energy by the year 2010.
