Fuel From An Unusual Source: Bacteria

Yesterday while searching on the internet for the latest renewable energy technologies, I stumbled upon one company in particular. This company which goes by the name of LS9 Inc., is creating alternative fuel from a very microscopic source: Bacteria. So how exactly does it do this? Utilizing a specifically engineered strain of bacteria, scientists can make this altered bacteria produce biofuel after it eats cellulose rich items.

The LS9 biofuel has both economic and environmental benefits to it. Unlike ethanol and hydrogen which require redesign of vehicle parts, fueling stations, and entirely new vehicles, the LS9 biofuel can be used alongside the petroleum products used in our current time. In addition to the infrastructure aspects of it, the company estimates that financially it will be able to compete with foreign oil. In fact, the company estimates that it will be able to produce around the $50 dollar per-barrel range. This is significantly cheaper than the current price of about $115 dollars a barrel. The fuel is also cleaner and produces less pollution than conventional oil.

There is no doubt that there is something good going on at LS9 Inc. It will be very interesting to see what develops with them in the next couple of years. For more details about this breaking technology please check out LS9 Inc.
