Google Investing Millions in Enhanced Geothermal

I absolutely LOVE Google. Their search engine has far surpassed all other competition on the internet. Their strong success is do in part to the large array of products that they offer. There are many products for all levels of computer users, ranging from the casual user to the master web designer, of which I frequently use. But I also like Google because of their strong commitment to helping society. So what does this have to do with an energy site? Well, today Google announced that they are investing more than ten million dollars in enhanced geothermal systems.

The technology is different from traditional forms of geothermal that are found in Iceland and other volcanic regions of the world. Instead of finding and using underground hot water pools, which are more scarce, the enhanced geothermal systems allows for almost anywhere on earth to be used to produce electricity. This process is completed by drilling deep into the earth, breaking open the hot rocks that exist there, and then pumping water down. The pumped water becomes heated and gets brought up to the earth’s surface. Once above the ground, it can be used to power a turbine, which in turn creates electricity.

The investment is part of Google.org’s renewable energy less than coal program. The program is aimed at reducing the costs of electricity produced by alternative energy sources below that of coal power plants. For further details please check out Google EGS
