How Can I Get Involved?
Just last week I received another thoughtful email by one of our daily readers, Linda. In Linda’s email, she expressed the need for people to get involved with alternative energy projects. This subject is actually something that I have been meaning to post about for some length of time now, so I’m especially grateful that Linda brought this up. So in this blog post I will be sharing my mindset into how each and everyone one of us can get involved.
The question of “How Can I Get Involved” comes with a wide range of answers. Each and everyone of us can name different things that could be done to accomplish this task. Below are a few of the things that come to my mind when answering this question.
Education: Education in my opinion is probably one of the best ways in which a person can get involved. The importance of education lies in learning about what renewable energies have to offer. People can learn and understand what these things are all about, before jumping to conclusions. I know this first hand.
Like I stated in a previous post, when the news first broke about the proposed Cape Cod Wind Farm, I became strongly opposed to the idea. I let my mind unfairly make that judgment before learning about what the project had to offer to society. And wouldn’t you know it, that once I began to research the subject matter and became acquainted with this project that my opinion altered. Now, I am in support for the wind farm. This is why it is of utmost importance for websites like this one to place a strong emphasis on giving valuable information to the public about renewable energy. Through this, we can eliminate many of the misconceptions that people initially have about them.
Conservation: Conservation is an almost elementary thing to do. However a lot of people overlook this seemingly easy task. Leaving certain electronics on such as computers, televisions, fans, lights etc. when not in use consume and waste energy. You can solve this problem by turning off these items when not in use. Simple enough right? In addition you can purchase energy efficient appliances ranging from refrigerators to washing machines that use less electricity than conventional ones. On a less costly scale, you can purchase energy saving compact florescent light bulbs. These light bulbs consume about one-fourth of what is used in incandescent light bulbs. By conserving energy you will use less energy, which will lower your electric bills. Heck, who doesn’t like help the environment and save money at the same time.
Contacting Politicians: Write to your local and state politicians and tell them about the interest and support that you have for alternative energy. Our politicians are supposed to work for us, and we elect them, so it is suiting that they do everything in their power to bring these projects to life.
More to come on this topic, so please stay tuned.
