Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Envision
Take a moment to picture New York City in your mind. You may think of a congested city street filled with thousands of people. Or, perhaps you may think of the physical structures within the city. A concrete and steel jungle with buildings of all shapes and sizes, many of which are engineering marvels, filling the skyline. Now envision this, wind turbines on top of these structures. Sounds crazy right? Well not exactly.
This past week at a clean energy summit in Las Vegas, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg announced plans on how he believes the largest city in the United States could generate clean and renewable energy. The mayor called for wind turbines to be implemented on top of many of the buildings within the city. In addition to this, he called for offshore wind turbine farms, roof-mounted solar panels, ocean tidal generators, and geothermal power plants to be built.
I’m a little skeptical that the roof-top wind turbines will work out to be a good idea, to me it just seems that there would be potential liability issues with them. In addition, maintaining these would be another key issue. In my opinion a roof-top in an urban setting is better suited for the implementation of solar panels. I’d be very curious to hear from some of our readers on here about their thoughts on this.
